How old do you need to be to start swimming lessons?
Babies can start as young as 6 months. We don't actually teach them to swim as we know it, but teach them water familiarisation, movement through water, floating, and breath control using games and song. We also have a 90 year old lady participating in our aquarobics classes as well as many other mature age people who have started to learn to swim later in life. You are never too old or too young to learn.
How many children in a class?
This depends on the class but as an early beginner, four is the maximum. As the child progresses and improves the numbers increase, as does the duration of the class. Children not only learn from doing but also from watching other students. Numbers peak at 10 in our Superfish class where the full lane is used and the duration of the class is 45 minutes.
How warm are the pools?
We keep the pools at a warm and comfortable 32 degrees celsius. Children will take a lot longer to learn to swim if they are cold, as they find it difficult to concentrate.
How long are the pools?
All State Swim pools are either 20 or 25 metres
How often should you attend swimming lessons?
With so many other things that children are doing today, once a week is normal but we suggest twice weekly for the first three months, to familiarise themselves with their new environment and get used to taking instructions from somebody else. At the end of the day we all learn by repetition and continuity - so it's very important that once you start lessons you attendance is consistent.
Attending swimming lessons once a week for 12 months equates to only 26 hours if your child attends 30 minute classes weekly. Miss just a few lessons a year and this is less again. Remember when your child was learning to crawl/walk they were practising 7 days a week, 8 hours a day. Do the maths on those numbers. All children will learn in their own time, please be patient, encouraging, and above all, be consistent.
